Usury turns Këmpes back
He was supposed to come as deputy assistant chief of the American mission for weapons dismantling. Now that the country has fallen into turmoil, John Këmpes will take on another role, he will be the first American chargé d’affaires in Tiranë.
"I am not satisfied with the talks being held with the Albanian ambassador in Brussels... These may be natural, but in this situation after the protests in the city of Lushnja, and after that protest in Tiranë I think the presence of American diplomacy in the country is necessary".
This is how the deputy assistant secretary of state for Europe Elisabeth Jones said at a press conference in the US. Expressing her government’s concern about the situation in the country, she announced that they are considering replacing the newly appointed ambassador, Mariza Lino, with the well-known diplomat John Menzies and sending former assistant secretary for Europe, John Këmpes, to Tiranë. "We will continue to monitor the situation in Tiranë, but I remain concerned because there are a large number of Americans who live and work in the country. Nevertheless, we are doing everything possible to ensure that they leave if this becomes necessary," said Mrs. Jones. According to her, the swift arrival of the senior American official in Tiranë is a signal that the US has assessed the situation in our country with concern. Elisabeth Jones confirmed that the US is ready to help the Albanian government and the people in every way to get out of this situation, but stressed that there is an urgent need to stabilize the situation and continue carrying out reforms.
